WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to Iowa to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by flooding beginning on May 25, 2011, and continuing.

Federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis in the counties of Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Pottawattamie, and Woodbury for debris removal and emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Michael R. Scott has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. Scott said that additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Hi John,Great info about FEMA’s efforts with the piatrve sector! Here in Massachusetts, the piatrve sector has representation at the Mass. Emergency Management Agency during emergencies. Emergency Support Function 18 (ESF-18) is staffed by members of the piatrve sector to provide real-time information to companies. ESF-18 is organized through the Northeast Disaster Recovery Information X-Change (NEDRIX.) NEDRIX has a free emergency notification system for individuals.NEDRIX provided staff for ESF-18 during the MWRA Water Main Break, Hurricane Earl, and the Dec. 26th Blizzard. We were able to send out the latest weather alerts, employee travel safety info, and other info for business continuity and disaster recovery professionals. In 2011, we’ll see FEMA and state Emergency Management Agencies forming more piatrve sector partnerships, which will strengthen our community response and resilience in disasters.
